Description
The Sacred Pools is an unreleased PC and Sega Saturn full motion video game. It was one of the first projects to be announced by the newly formed SegaSoft, and was to be a full motion video adventure game similar to the likes of Myst, seemingly set to take place across three CD-ROMs. Being technically independent from Sega, the team also planned to bring the game to the PlayStation.
The game featured at E3 1996 but was not seen afterwards. Prototypes have since been dumped.
During development the game was likely known as Rebellion. A prototype under that name has been found which shares similar video clips to The Sacred Pools (though the build of Rebellion is so early it's hard to know if the FMVs were planned to be used in the same way).
The game was presumably cancelled due to its very poor quality.
Sacred Pools is a strange, ambitious misfire that could only come from a 90s FMV game. Some things surprisingly hold up. The video footage you see is well-shot and the set design and costumes are something to behold — the multi-million dollar budget really shows. In the press, SegaSoft toted the game’s VNRS technology (“Virtual Navigation in Real Space”), which allowed seamless 3D movement in FMV environments. There is not much information about VNRS (for all we know, it could just be marketing mumbo jumbo) but you can see a crumb of it in gameplay. There are hardly any cuts in Sacred Pools. When you have to make a turn, the camera follows your POV. It often does feel like 3D.
The focus of the game is exploring the mazes littered across the world. You get few clues as to where you should go, and you’ll often end up at a dead end, lost, face-to-face with an enemy. You watch the camera trudge down the wrong way and then watch it reverse. The mazes make the game feel extraordinarily slow at times.

Repack Notes
- The game runs with DxWnd
- Tested "OK" on Windows 10
IMPORTANT NOTE about closing the game:
Seems like the game cannot exit when you tell it to from the Pause menu in the upper-left corner (Alt + F4 doesn't work too), so simply press the Windows key on your keyboard and on the Sacred Pools' icon right-click and click on Exit. You may need to repeat this procedure couple of times, the game will hang and display an error message. It's fine, rest of that the game-saving & loading functionality works as expected
