Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts

Description

If there’s one commonality between hunting games, is that they’re pretty far removed from their gaming betters. They should have a lot in common with tactical shooters, but are almost always poorly programed, suffer from terribly designed controls and are plagued by a dysfunctional interface. While actually looking good, Dangerous Hunts sports many aspects found in everyday shooters, including the default WASD keys for movement, left-clicking to activate the scope function and a menu interface that is clear, friendly and good-looking.

The game sports three modes of play – quick hunt and career hunt and the new feature, action zone. In action zone your avatar is ported to a remote area and you are the target of the hunt, by an assortment of wild animals. The idea is to progress from area to area, and kill all the wild beasts that are trying to eat you. You are not given much in the way of weaponry, and basically have to stalk and bring them down without them getting too much in your face.

The game does have a nice array of features including 27 big game animals to hunt, 12 locations, and plenty of weapons such as sniper rifles, shotguns, revolves, knives and hunting bows, all with their highs and lows as far as power, accuracy, weight and noise. The game has a light RPG aspect to it. While the characters you can pick have certain distinguishing attributes that pertain to stealth, targeting, or woods savvy, there are basic body types that can be customized in terms of outfitting. …

Primal Prey

Description

Time travel is now a reality. After a rigorous battery of physical and mental testing only a handful of civilians are allowed to access to the government controlled time portals. Public and private groups often seek out these chosen civilians for special missions. You are one of the chosen few Time Travelers.

The government has very strict regulations about where and when Time Travelers can go. Although you’ve been given clearance to travel, it takes a substantial ammount of money to buy your travel time. A portal to the Cretaceous period has been made available to you. With some private funding you are able to purchase the time necessary to take on a few of these specialized missions. There’s only a small ammount of money left over to purchase a tranquilizing pistol. Armed only with your pistol and hunting skill you pick a mission. The time portal opens and you step in.

In Primal Prey, to succeed and stay alive, you must learn the dinosaurs’ world. You must also learn the abilities and limitations of each of the weapons available to you, as they will be the tools that keep you alive. This is hunting in a very primitive setting, but also hunting with very advanced technology. That makes for a volatile mix. …

The Mummy

Description

The Mummy is a straightforward reenactment of a two-fisted adventure, straight from the movie starring Brendan Frasier — at least the fighting parts. It could be argued that the game is mostly a Doom remake with skins that happen to be Egyptian in appearance. Since the movie focused mainly on Rick O’Connell blasting away at things with lots of guns, though, the game lends itself well to the first-person shooter genre.

In terms of graphics, Rick O’Connell’s face is mapped onto the figure, although he’s a bit blocky, and he sports incredibly muscle-bound proportions that aren’t evident in the movie. When he lights or douses a torch, the lightning in each area adjusts appropriately. The camera floats just over and above Rick’s shoulder and has a built in “quick swivel” that moves so he’s always facing away from any wall or object he’s against. This nice feature allows him to look down at a pit when his back is against the wall, without requiring you to have to continually adjust the perspective.

Unfortunately, the game isn’t always a first-person blaster in that it uses other elements, too, such as a game-within-a-game motif that includes a surfing exercise requiring the hero to jump or duck obstacles while riding a log down an underground river. Unlike other parts of the game where Rick can take cumulative damage before dying, one misstep on the log causes instantaneous death, depositing Rick back at the beginning of the level in third-person perspective before he reaches the surfing portion again. …

Warhammer – Dark Omen

Description

A few years after helping to end the skaven plot in Shadow of the Horned Rat, Morgan Bernhardt, commander of the “Grudgebringer” mercenaries, continues to take on work for those who have the gold to spare with the Empire. After helping to defend a trading post from a goblin attack, Bernhardt finds himself called to the city of Altdorf for a meeting with Emperor Karl Franz, who reveals to him that orcs have recently begun invading the Border Princes from the south. Agreeing to help Sven Carlsson, a border prince and Bernhardt’s old friend and employer, the mercenaries head to contend with the threat, but soon discover that the orcs are fleeing into the empire to escape attack from an increasing number of undead forces.

Returning to Altdorf with news of this matter, Franz sends reinforcements to assist Carlsson. He then assigns Bernhardt to reinforce an Imperial fort under attack, whilst escorting his cousin, Countess Isabella Von Liberhurtz, to a town along his route. During the escort, bandit ambush the group, whereupon Bernhardt learns that a vampire lord seeks to abduct Isabella and make her his bride. After assisting the fort, the mercenaries return to Altdorf, whereupon they learn that Isabella was kidnapped after her escort was over, and that the recently increasing number of undead forces across the Old World is the result of an evil undead entity, known as the Dread King, having returned to the world. Learning that the Dread King now seeks three objects to increase his power, Bernhardt finds himself tasked with investigating what each is and preventing the undead from retrieving them, reluctantly being joined by Witchhunter General Matthias in his quest. …
