Daytona USA

Description

A port of the most successful arcade racer ever, the home versions of Daytona USA include the same elements that made the original version successful: three highly detailed tracks, arcade driving physics that challenge the player to find the best trajectory to make a flying lap without kissing the rails and beating the checkpoint timer. The 40 cars of the Easy race (later named 3-7 Speedway), one of the stalwarts of the original version, are also present in this version.

These home versions include a new mode (Saturn or PC Mode, depending on the platform) where the three tracks are played without the timer, and optionally in mirror mode, using one of the bonus cars (with additional abilities such as driving on grass or hitting the rails without losing speed) and in one of three lengths: Normal (identical to the arcade original), Grand Prix (2.5 times longer) and Endurance (10 times longer).

On the downside, detail and frame rate suffered a drop to fit the game into the limited hardware of the Saturn and Personal Computers, and lacking any kind of multiplayer, comparing to the two to eight player rumbles of the arcade version. …

Archimedean Dynasty

Description

In the future, resources became increasingly scarce, leading to continuous wars between various countries on Earth. The surface of the planet became so polluted that it was impossible for humanity to live on it any more. Nuclear explosions covered the outside world, and humans fled into the depths of the ocean. Soon, the continents were flooded, and nuclear winter imprisoned the Earth. However, humans continued to live in the stations on the ocean’s bottom, in a new world without sunlight – a world called Aqua.

By the middle of the 27th century, Aqua has been divided into the democratic Atlantic Federation, the oligarchy of the Arabic Clans Union, and the monarchist Russo-Japanese Shogunate. A mercenary named Emerald “Deadeye” Flint is hired by a man called El Topo to escort a sulfur-transporting cargo ship, and gets kidnapped by a group of Shogunate mercenaries in the process. For unknown reasons, their female leader Hong Long helps Flint escape. As Flint begins to undertake missions to repay his debt to El Topo, he becomes involved in a political struggle, unable to distinguish friend from foe. …

NHL 97

Description

1997 edition of EA’s NHL sport simulation series. Improvements in this edition come mostly in the graphical arena, with a refined version of the “virtual stadium” system that adds new camera angles (including the classical top-down one strangely missing from NHL 96), and polygonal players instead of the bitmap-based ones with motion-captured animations.

Other extras include multiplayer support for up to 8 players through network or Gravis’s GrIP system, the option to create new players and trade them around, and the usual amount of EA sports licensed multimedia flair, including an interesting “Goalie Mask Viewer” which lets you observe the elaboratedly decorated helmets of 30 goalies. …

Madden NFL 97

Description

Hut one, hut two, vaporware? Not!
Madden 96 was one of the most anticipated sports releases of last year but it never happened. Electronics Arts went thought a couple of reorganizations, refocusings and wasn’t satisfied with the way the game was turning out, so they scrapped it. Learning from their mistakes on Madden 96, EA Sports started over from the begining. The results? A really sweet football sim.

First let me say that I’m not a rabid fan of football but I respect the strategy of the plays. My father was the captain of his high school’s football team but he directed us kids into safer sports like swimming and soccer. Closest I got to playing the game was with one of those vibrating electronic games that the kid down the street had. We spent hours setting up our men and then flipping the power on, sending scrimmage line wiggling down the field. I think the last football video game I played was on the Atari. …

Command & Conquer – Red Alert

Description

What if Hitler never existed? Einstein pondered the question and created a time-machine to eliminate Hitler as a young man, thus preventing World War II as history remembers it. However, Einstein stopped one evil only to create another – because Stalin’s Soviet Union is now poised to conquer Europe… and Allies must stop them!

Command & Conquer: Red Alert can be considered a prequel to Command & Conquer. Like its predecessor, it is a real-time strategy with an isometric semi-top-down perspective using 2D sprite graphics engine. The player takes control of either the Allies or the Soviets, as he battles for destiny of the planet. Gameplay features are similar to those of the previous game, including building a base with some defenses, massing units, harvesting resources, etc. The game has a variety of environments in its missions, adding some indoor missions that use only infantry units. …

Exhumed (PowerSlave)

Description

Powerslave is a fist person shooter with an arcade style level progression. There are 20 consecutive single-player levels and 12 multiplayer deathmatch levels.

Unknown alien forces have invaded the city of Karnak, and isolated it from the rest of the world. The inhabitants were subjected to torture, or injected with a substance, turning them into servient mummies. Even the mummy of king Ramses was not spared. After multiple failed attempts from world leaders to send armed forces to deal with the situation, you were chosen among a select few of the world’s best special forces to infiltrate Karnak and destroy the invading forces from within. The mission turns awry, however, when your helicopter is shot down, and you find yourself alone, hoping to complete your mission and get out of the fray alive.

Contrary to the later console adaptations of the game, each of the 20 singleplayer levels are played back to back with the player hunting for keys and secret areas to proceed onto the next level, similar to other games of the time, such as DOOM. The game features a single save slot for each playthrough and has a checkpoint system, allowing the player to continue from the latest checkpoint they have found. Levels range from ancient cities and temples through sprawling caverns of also lava variety all the way to the alien Kilmaat ships, and are filled with traps and keys hiding multiple pathways from initial access. …
