Age of Wonders

Description

Age of Wonders is a turn-based strategy game set in a fantasy scenario. The campaign can be played on two sides and tells a tale how the humans come to a new land and destabilized the peace between the races, throwing the land into war. The game also features several stand-alone scenarios. There is an extensive diplomatic matrix which structures the relationships between the 12 races and their respective leaders. There are global-spells which can be cast on the strategic map, outside of tactical combat.

Creatures can move around without being led by a hero, so the map eventually crawls with all sorts of strange beings. Neutral forces are not always static, most of them move around and sometimes attack the 12 races. The automatic tactical-combat mode shows a somewhat detailed overview of the combat simulation: it is a worthwhile substitute for impatient gamers, especially in multiplayer encounters.

As in Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia and Master of Magic, heroes are very important. They reach new levels of skill and power with experience and can be equipped with artifacts. But they do have limitations that usually do not allow a solitary hero to overrun a city-garrison all by himself. …

Aliens Versus Predator is a sci-fi first-person shooter based on the associated two film franchises. The game has three playable species, and each has its own single-player campaign with different missions and plotlines.

– Aliens – Their only weapons are their own body parts: claws for close combat, their deadly tail, and their inner mouth that can crack through an enemy’s skull (for an instant kill) if close enough. They are deadly at close range, and can heal by eating corpses or the heads of unsuspecting enemies. They can’t be hurt through falls, and an alternate vision mode allows them to see clearly ahead through darkness. Their strength lies in flexibility and speed, and an ability to cling to walls and run along any surface – allowing a skilled player to escape or ambush from literally any 3D direction.

– Humans – U.S. Marines, as portrayed by Michael Biehn in the film ‘Aliens’. Marines have strong firepower that ranges from the self-tracking SmartGun, all the way to rocket launchers and devistating six-barrel miniguns (as seen in ‘Predator’). The Marines are the most familiar species to play as, with the gameplay style of typical FPS hero. However, their frailty at close range, and missions that leave them stranded, alone, surrounded by bloodthirsty extraterrestrials, make their experience closer to survival horror. …

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun is a real-time strategy game and the direct sequel to the original Command & Conquer, set in the year 2030.

The Earth is now heavily contaminated with the alien crystalline substance known as Tiberium and is becoming less habitable with time, while new life forms have formed in areas of serious contamination. While the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) still has a technologically advanced arsenal, it is also tasked with Tiberium research and abatement. The Brotherhood of Nod suddenly re-emerges from hiding, and its leader Kane, believed to have been dead since the assault on Sarajevo in the First Tiberium War, unveils himself to General Solomon on GDI’s orbital station Philadelphia. As Nod’s sneak attacks start scourging the world like decades prior, GDI prepares for self-defense. Meanwhile, survivors of Tiberium mutation who call themselves The Forgotten live separated from society, but are about to become relevant for both GDI and Nod efforts.

Tiberian Sun debuted an isometric engine which combines the use of 2D sprites with 3D voxels (short for volume elements). There are even larger differences between the two playable sides in terms of gameplay styles and visual design – GDI prefers brute force while Nod specializes in hit-and-run tactics and the element of surprise. Some of the technologically advanced units include hovercrafts, subterranean flame tanks (aptly named “Devil’s Tongues”), mechanized walkers, etc. Each side now also has multiple support powers at their disposal, and some of the special technologies have direct counters – stealth units can be discovered by mobile sensor arrays, while subterranean units can be directed further from sensitive areas with concrete pavement. The campaigns, similar to those in preceding titles, have side missions which can aid in resolving main missions (e.g. destroying a nearby outpost will reduce the size of the enemy army in the main mission). …

SWAT 3 – Close Quarters Battle

Description

After many negotiations, the United Nations Nuclear Abolishment Treaty is about to be signed in L.A., celebrating what’s to be named the “Global Peace Day”. However, the joyous occasion is also seen by domestic and international terrorists as a soapbox for their demands, and it’s up to SWAT to keep everything going as planned. As if terrorist threats are not enough, two portable nuclear demolition devices are for sale… in the L.A. area.

A tactical FPS, the player is in control of a five man strike team, and it’s up to him to guide the other two-man teams to complete each mission, for a total of 16, ranging from dangerous arrests, hostage rescue, VIP escort to track and disarm bombs, while visiting landmarks of the city such as the City Hall or the Convention Center (where the E3 takes place). To help the strike team, each officer has one of four standard-issue weapons to choose from, a sidearm and utilities such as glowsticks, C2 door breaching charges, CS gas, flashbangs and the always useful optiwand, to know what’s after the corner and the Leatherman tool, to disable electronic devices and unlock doors. …

Rollercoaster Tycoon is a real-time isometric amusement park simulation, in which the player takes the role of a theme park manager, creating rides and attractions to amuse his guests, as well as shops and stalls in case the guests are hungry.

Ride stats differ, with some being gentle and meant for “waking up” tired guests, and others being rather intense. Each and every guest has his own excitement and nausea tolerance, which will reflect on the rides’ popularity and the park’s tidiness. Hence, handymen are employed. Rides can also break down, and some of them can even crash, leading to a tragic ending. Mechanics can be employed to inspect rides for possible errors and to fix already broken rides. Security guards prevent vandalism in their line of sight, and entertainers keep guests happy while waiting in a long queue line.

Guests are also impressed if there is some wonderful scenery scattered around the park, leading to an increase in the park rating. They all have their opinion on the park, so it is a good idea to check their thoughts every now and then, as the park rating depends on the guests’ satisfaction. …
