Deus Ex

Description

Some time during the 2050’s, the world is a dangerous place as terrorists, drug czars, and outlaw states rule, using violence and subterfuge as tools in their push for global conquest. A deadly virus dubbed “gray death” is running rampant throughout the world and the only known cure is a chemical known as “Ambrosia” manufactured by the VersaLife corporation. However Ambrosia supplies are scarce and world governments, particularly the United States, carefully monitor and control who receives this cure. As protest against these events, French terrorist organization “Silhouette” bombs the historic symbol of friendship between French and American people, The Statue of Liberty. In response to this attack, the United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO) organization is formed. Building a headquarters underground at Liberty Island, its mission is to attack terrorism and maintain peace around the world. JC Denton is a nano-enhanced agent who has been primed for UNATCO service. While JC’s brother Paul is already an active agent, JC is beginning his first day of service when the National Secessionist Forces (NSF) suddenly raid a supply of Ambrosia at UNATCO headquarters.

Deus Ex is a dark cyberpunk game that combines gameplay styles of first-person shooter and RPG, with elements of stealth and puzzle-solving. The player assumes the role of JC Denton, UNATCO anti-terrorist agent. Pitted against an elaborate global conspiracy, he must interact with characters, pick up weapons and complete objectives. While JC is essentially fixed within the mission-framework of the game, he can be customized in areas such as weapons, technical skills and physical prowess. Completing objectives rewards the player with skill points, which may be distributed to increase JC’s proficiencies in eleven different disciplines. The player can choose to increase the damage JC inflicts with various types of weapons, improve his lock-picking or computer hacking abilities, etc. Each such discipline has four levels of proficiency. …

Gameplay is the usual found in games of the genre – button mashing the two power buttons is required in most events to build up strength/speed, with an additional third button setting the actions, such as jumping or throwing angle. Other events feature alternate control methods, such as Slalom (where it’s possible to press certain buttons to dodge the rower between the gates if the Kayak is going to hit one or place the paddle to force into a certain direction), Diving (following a “click-along” sequence of keys) and Skeet (the direction keys controlling the aim, one button to start and other to shoot). …

Heroes Chronicles

Description

First in a series of shorter, story-driven games based on the Heroes of Might and Magic III engine. Each game consists of a single campaign recounting an important period in the life of Tarnum, the immortal hero.

Warlords is billed as a “prequel,” telling the story of Tarnum’s quest to lead his barbarian peoples to throw off the oppressive rule of Bracaduun and the Wizards who are his master. However, as the intro gives away, while Tarnum will become King, in doing so he will commit crimes that cause the ancestors to refuse him admission to paradise, and he will be returned as the immortal hero of the next episode (Conquest of the Underworld).

The campaign consists of eight scenarios, with Tarnum carrying his experience forward from scenario to scenario. The game plays exactly like Heroes III: Shadow of Death (three scenarios include combination artifacts). The story advances during each scenario through frequent text pop-ups. There are also movies for every scenario, instead of just one per campaign. In keeping with the plot, the early scenarios have only Stronghold and Fortress towns, with Castle and Tower towns showing up later. …

Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn is a party-based role-playing game using the AD&D rules. The basic gameplay is similar to that of its predecessor: the player navigates a party of up to six active combatants over isometric environments, conversing with non-playable characters using branching dialogue, and fighting enemies in real-time, free-movement combat that can be paused to issue specific orders to the characters. World traveling now occurs by selecting locations on a map rather than exploring wilderness areas to reach the destination. However, the game world is larger than in the previous game, with more individual locations to visit and side quests to perform. …
