Freedom Fighters

Description

The Soviet Union became a world superpower by dropping the first atomic bomb on Berlin, ending World War II, and propping up communist states throughout the globe which begin to surround the US in the present day. New York plumbing brothers Chris and Troy Stone travel to meet with their next client, an activist named Isabella Angelina, only to find her apartment abandoned. The Soviet Union launches a surprise invasion of New York City and suddenly Soviet soldiers, led by General Vasilij Tatarin, seize Troy. Amidst the attack, Chris escapes to the streets, encountering a man named Mr. Jones and resistance member Phil Bagzton. After rescuing Isabella from a police station and Troy from a post office, the group retreats to the sewers and sets up a base of operations as New York is lost, with the media now being controlled by the Soviet Union.

Months later, Chris, Phil, and Isabella sabotage key Soviet facilities and reclaim areas within the city, building up a resistance group of New York citizens and disillusioned Soviet soldiers. Chris becomes known as the “Freedom Phantom” within the Soviet-controlled media network, SAFN. Troy is captured by Soviet troops and tortured for information. Forced into issuing a public statement aimed at the resistance to cease their actions, he breaks from the prepared text and urges Chris to continue fighting. In response, General Tatarin has Troy taken to Fort Jay and executes him personally. Mr. Jones suggests assassinating Tatarin in retaliation. Chris succeeds, but returns to find Isabella missing and the resistance base occupied by the Soviet Army. The operation was orchestrated by Mr. Jones who reveals himself to be KGB agent Colonel Bulba. Chris escapes with Phil and others to a new underground area while SAFN reports on the death of Tatarin, Colonel Bulba’s promotion to General, and the “end” of the resistance in New York. …

Need for Speed – Underground

Description

Need for Speed: Underground is the seventh installment in the Need for Speed series, and was developed by EA Black Box and published by Electronic Arts in 2003. Two different games were produced, one for consoles and Windows, and the other for the Game Boy Advance.

Underground rebooted the franchise, ignoring the previous Need for Speed games which featured sports cars and exotics. It was the first game in the series to offer a career mode featuring a storyline, and a garage mode that allowed players to fully customize their cars with a large variety of brand-name performance and visual upgrades. All races take place in a generic city at night called Olympic City, though the city bears some resemblance to New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Rather than exotic cars, Underground featured vehicles associated with the import scene. Underground was commercially successful, and was followed by Need for Speed: Underground 2 in 2004.

Circuit is a standard race that involves racing with up to three opponents’ cars around a loop track for one lap or more, and is the main mode of the game. For about the last 4 races of underground mode, the number of players decreases to only 1 rival, and the number of laps reach up to seven (endurance race). …

Big Rigs – Over the Road Racing

Description

Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing is a racing video game developed by Stellar Stone and published by GameMill Publishing, released for Microsoft Windows on November 20, 2003, in North America.

The packaging of Big Rigs states that the main objective of the game is to race a semi-trailer truck (known colloquially as a “big rig”) in order to safely deliver illegal cargo being carried by the vehicle, while avoiding the local police force. In the game itself, no objectives beyond reaching the finish line of a circular track are presented, no load is attached to the trucks, and the police are nowhere to be found. Much of the game instead centers on the player racing their truck against fellow drivers to the finish line; however, in the earlier versions the player’s computer-controlled opponent vehicles have no AI and never move from the starting position. In a later version, the computer-controlled opponent will race around the track but will stop just before crossing the finish line. The timer in the game is merely aesthetic and has no limit on the gameplay. In addition, due to a lack of collision detection, there are no obstacles to navigate within the game, and the player is able to phase through buildings and terrain, or even leave the confines of the game level altogether. When going forwards, none of the vehicles can go any faster than 80 miles per hour, but when going in reverse, the speedometer keeps going and looping around itself infinitely. So, it is technically possible for the truck to pass the speed of light. …

Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts

Description

If there’s one commonality between hunting games, is that they’re pretty far removed from their gaming betters. They should have a lot in common with tactical shooters, but are almost always poorly programed, suffer from terribly designed controls and are plagued by a dysfunctional interface. While actually looking good, Dangerous Hunts sports many aspects found in everyday shooters, including the default WASD keys for movement, left-clicking to activate the scope function and a menu interface that is clear, friendly and good-looking.

The game sports three modes of play – quick hunt and career hunt and the new feature, action zone. In action zone your avatar is ported to a remote area and you are the target of the hunt, by an assortment of wild animals. The idea is to progress from area to area, and kill all the wild beasts that are trying to eat you. You are not given much in the way of weaponry, and basically have to stalk and bring them down without them getting too much in your face.

The game does have a nice array of features including 27 big game animals to hunt, 12 locations, and plenty of weapons such as sniper rifles, shotguns, revolves, knives and hunting bows, all with their highs and lows as far as power, accuracy, weight and noise. The game has a light RPG aspect to it. While the characters you can pick have certain distinguishing attributes that pertain to stealth, targeting, or woods savvy, there are basic body types that can be customized in terms of outfitting. …

The game includes a trophy room that shows the wounds the animal took from your shots, a mission editor, and a Bullet Cam (optional) that tracks the bullet on its way to the kill. …

The Simpsons – Hit & Run

Description

The Simpsons: Hit & Run has seven levels, each with missions and a sub-plot. The player can control one specific character in each level. The game’s playable characters are Homer, Bart, Lisa, Marge, and Apu, with Homer and Bart being playable twice each. When travelling on foot, the player character can walk, jump, run, and perform three types of melee attacks: a normal kick, a jumping kick, and a smashing move. To drive, the player can either hitchhike and control the driver in one of the many civilian vehicles that drive endlessly around town, or use a phone booth to select a car.Several hidden vehicles are present in each level and can also be used by the player if found. The game’s driving missions are also similar to those of Grand Theft Auto III. In both games, the player races against other characters, collects items before a timer runs out, and wrecks other cars.

The game has a sandbox-style format that emphasizes driving, and the player controls their character from a third-person view. The character can perform certain acts of violence, such as attacking pedestrians, blowing up vehicles, and destroying the environment. The Simpsons: Hit & Run has a warning meter that indicates when the police will retaliate for bad behaviour. Located in the bottom-right corner of the screen, the circular “hit and run” meter fills up when the character runs people over or destroys objects, and decreases when they cease doing so. When full, several police cars chase the character for the duration of the hit and run. In Level 7, instead of standard police cars, zombie police hearses chase the character. …
