Jazz Jackrabbit

Description

Jazz Jackrabbit is the PC world’s answer to Sonic the Hedgehog. In this platform game, Jazz, the hero of the rabbit planet Carrotus, must rescue the beloved rabbit princess, Eva Earlong, and defeat the leader of the turtle terrorists, Devan Shell, traveling to different planets to gather clues concerning Eva’s whereabouts while liberating them from Shell’s tyranny.

The similarity to Sonic the Hedgehog manifests itself in Jazz’s uncanny speed, and the fact it increases the more he runs. However, the rest of the gameplay mechanics are different. The game is primarily a shooter, meaning that in order to defeat his enemies, it’s not enough for Jazz to jump over their heads. Jazz starts with a blaster, but during the course of the game acquires other weapons, such as grenade launcher, flamethrower, TNT, etc. Jazz can also pick up various power-ups, including a force shield, a hoverboard that allows him to float in the air, a bird that will fight on Jazz’s side, and others. …

Jazz Jackrabbit 2

Description

Jazz the jackrabbit was just about to marry his girlfriend Eva Earlong, when his arch-nemesis, the turtle Devan Shell, stole the wedding ring. To add insult to injury, Eva’s hostile mother has locked Jazz and his brother Spaz in a dungeon. The two hares must escape, retrieve the precious jewel, and punish Devan for his evil deeds.

Like its predecessor, Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is a platform shooter. Unlike the previous installment, the sequel allows the player to control Spaz as well. Jazz retains his ability to hover in the air by using his ears, and Spaz can stomp and smash enemies. The hares use a default blaster gun with unlimited ammunition and can later acquire more powerful weapons, a few of which (e.g. a freezing gun) were not found in the first game. Coins can be found throughout the stages and then given to vendors to access bonus areas. …

This puzzle game begins as the Gruntz – these are the creatures that the player controls throughout the game – are whisked off to another realm. These gruntz must venture through this new world to gather missing pieces of the Warp Stone to return home.

Most of the game requires players to lead their Gruntz through a series of mazes, where it becomes necessary to avoid “trapz,” find various “switchez” and try to recover the Warp Stone. Along the way, the army of Gruntz should grow as new “toolz,” and “toyz” (such as “beach ballz,” and “yo-yoz”) are found. There are over 60 tools to aid the players through their quest. …

Bonkheads

Description

Bonkheads is a fun little Mario Bros clone that plays a lot harder than it looks. You control Crag as he travels down the underworld – twelve worlds are on offer with five levels each, plus numerous enemies, power-ups and the odd boss fights along the way. Gameplay is pretty much identical to Mario Bros – you have to knock out enemies by hitting the tiles that they walk on, kind of like you could do in the old Mario games. Enemies become unconscious after you knock them out, and you have a few seconds to throw them off the level before they get back up.

It sounds simple but the levels become increasingly challenging and the gameplay ever more frantic as you progress. It’s a fine tap dance as you try to avoid getting swarmed while dodging the occasional random hazard like falling tires. You can even the playing field by saving periodically and bringing a friend to play with you, as Bonkheads supports two players on the same computer. It’s all good simple, challenging fun. …
