Discworld Noir

Description

Ankh-Morpork is a city surrounded by darkness, where the cold river Ankh flows, where it always rains, and where dwarves and trolls co-exist with secret societies, religious fanatics, stupid police captains, and bar pianists. It is also where a bitterly sarcastic sharp-eyed private investigator named Lewton tries to earn a living solving bizarre cases. A mysterious woman named Carlotta hires him to find her lost lover. Wandering through the dark city and gathering evidence, Lewton has to solve the case, confront a sinister conspiracy, and once again become torn between love and despair.

Discworld Noir differs from other Discworld adventure games not only thanks to its more serious tone and much darker “film noir” atmosphere, but also because of its gameplay. Instead of inventory-based puzzles there are clues, which Lewton writes down in his notebook and which should be then used whenever there is a connection between the clue and the situation in question. Most of the gameplay is thus dedicated to detective work in conversations; but the usage of the right clues at the right place is still comparable to inventory-based puzzle-solving of other adventures. Graphically, Discword Noir features three-dimensional character models and pre-rendered backgrounds. …

Dungeon Siege – Legends of Aranna

Description

Located in the corner of the Aranna continent, the Kingdom of Ehb has recently gained independence following a prolonged war. One day, a small farming community is attacked by a band of wild creatures known as Krug. One of the farmers has to venture to the neighboring town of Stonebridge to seek help. During his travels he finds out that an even greater peril is threatening the land, and must find a way to stop it.

Dungeon Siege is a role-playing game sharing many similarities with Diablo. It is heavily combat-oriented and emphasizes item-gathering and gradual building up of the protagonist for purely battle-related purposes. The game’s linear progression is determined by quests that send the protagonist to newer areas. Combat is handled in a point-and-click fashion; when the player character fights alone, it resembles the action-based fights of Diablo. However, other characters may join the party as well, at which point combat flows in real time, somewhat similarly to the semi-automated party battles of Ultima VII. It is possible to build formations and assign basic tactics to the party as well. When a character’s health drops to zero, it becomes unconscious, and if left alone it will regenerate back to life. Other party members can speed up the healing process with spells. On the other hand if the enemies keep attacking the character will eventually die, and only resurrection spells can bring it back from the dead. …

Dark Colony

Description

In a gloomy not-so-distant future, mankind have finally made it to Mars. The colonization of the red planet is vital for humanity’s survival, as the heavily polluted Earth’s resources are nearly depleted. At the same time, the Taar, a mysterious alien race that lost their homeworld many centuries ago, has decided to take Mars as their new home.

As the war between the two species erupts, the player has to choose his side and lead his people to ultimate domination over the red planet. Things become even more complicated when the ruins of an extinct ancient civilization are found on Mars, revealing immensely destructive weapons that could easily turn the tide of the war in favor of the faction that manages to gain control over them first.

Dark Colony is a real-time strategy with heavy emphasis on the actual combat. Resource gathering, base construction and unit production have been made as simple and fast as possible, allowing the player to focus on decimating the enemy armies. Ancient artifacts, available in some of the missions, provide unique options for beating the odds, even when they seem to be against you (and they often will). …

Daytona USA

Description

A port of the most successful arcade racer ever, the home versions of Daytona USA include the same elements that made the original version successful: three highly detailed tracks, arcade driving physics that challenge the player to find the best trajectory to make a flying lap without kissing the rails and beating the checkpoint timer. The 40 cars of the Easy race (later named 3-7 Speedway), one of the stalwarts of the original version, are also present in this version.

These home versions include a new mode (Saturn or PC Mode, depending on the platform) where the three tracks are played without the timer, and optionally in mirror mode, using one of the bonus cars (with additional abilities such as driving on grass or hitting the rails without losing speed) and in one of three lengths: Normal (identical to the arcade original), Grand Prix (2.5 times longer) and Endurance (10 times longer).

On the downside, detail and frame rate suffered a drop to fit the game into the limited hardware of the Saturn and Personal Computers, and lacking any kind of multiplayer, comparing to the two to eight player rumbles of the arcade version. …

Daytona USA Deluxe

Description

Deluxe borrows most of its features from the US/PAL Championship Circuit Edition and the Japanese Circuit Edition, both Sega Saturn exclusives. However, it also adds eight-player network support and a brand new exclusive track; Silver Ocean Causeway. The original hornet from the arcade Daytona USA is also unlockable.

From a technical standpoint, Deluxe offers higher resolution gameplay (leading to higher resolution 2D assets such as the HUD) and greater draw distances over its Saturn counterparts. It has since received a Direct3D patch which adds texture filtering and a semi-functional fogging effect which attempts to hide geometry pop-in. The results of this feature are mixed, however, as no races take place in foggy conditions, meaning pop-in is still noticeable (scenery just appears as a light blue). Furthermore, draw distance is not significantly improved with the patch installed. …

Delta Force

Description

In this first-person 3D shooter, the player is put in the shoes of a Delta Force commando and will have to prove themselves by relying more on their abilities and tactical thinking than their weapons to complete their mission. They will nonetheless have a wide military arsenal at their disposal to dispatch their enemies if need be (from short ranged weapons such as a .45 pistol, to machine guns and long ranged sniper rifles, as well as bazookas, mines or grenades).

Besides a bunch of single player missions, multiplayer modes such as DeathMatch or Capture the Flag are available over the Internet or LAN. …
