The official game of the 1995 IRB Rugby Union World Cup in South Africa. Featuring all 20 international teams that took part in the World Cup including the All Blacks of New Zealand and the Springboks of South Africa, as well as an EA All Stars team and a few other minor rugby nations.

The game shares a lot with EA Sports’ early FIFA titles. It uses an isometric perspective, with buttons to pass and kick the ball, and a timed gauge for place kicks.

Description

As the first Rugby title on the PlayStation 2, EA Sports Rugby is a full on simulation of the sport (played mainly in Europe, Australasia and Africa). All of the major nations of rugby are represented, including Australia (the current World Cup champions), New Zealand, England, France and South Africa. The game is also fully licensed with every player of every team rendered into the game.

There are many trophies to be won, here’s a quick run down:

– World Cup: much the same as the football variety, the best in the world fight to become world champions
– 6 Nations: only 6 nations are represented in this European tournament to play as: Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy
– Tri-Nations: Australia, New Zealand and South Africa play in this tournament
– Bledisloe Cup: it’s Australia vs New Zealand, in a best of three tournament

Description

The official game of the 2003 Rugby Wold Cup in Australia, Rugby 2004 is the sequel to Rugby 2001 with HB Studios replacing The Creative Assembly as the developers.

Fully licensed by the IRB, Rugby 2004 features 75 stadiums from around the world, including all the World Cup venues, 95 teams including the British Lions and world champion Australian Wallabies and more than 2000 players each with individual names called by the BBC’s John Inverdale and Channel 7’s Gordon Bray.

Major additions to the game include Super 12 and European Cup provincial tournaments, a player editor, custom teams, skill challenges like those found in other EA Sports games and an exclusive soundtrack by INXS. …

Description

Rugby 2005 is the first update to EA Sports’ rugby franchise. The game is now powered by EA’s FIFA engine. Features include overhauled gameplay, motion captured animation, crowd chants for major stadiums, and unique heads for famous players. The BBC’s Ian Robertson and former All Black Murray Mexted provide commentary. Mexted also guides the player through extensive interactive training drills.

Rugby 2005 includes up to date listings for all the major international teams, plus options to edit squads and create new players. Players can compete in tournaments such as the 6 Nations, Tri Nations, Super 12 and European Trophy championships. …

Rugby 06 is another update to EA Sports’ rugby franchise.

Description

Rugby 08 is the seventh rugby union released by Electronic Arts, and the official game of the 2007 IRB Rugby World Cup. It features 23 national teams (some unlicensed), the fully licensed Super 14, Guiness Premiership (England), Celtic League and French and Italian team (unlicensed), as well as the Junior All Blacks, the Australian A’s and the unlicensed Pacific Islanders and Barbarians, as well as dozen of stadiums.

Game modes include the Rugby World Cup, Practice, several national and international tournaments such as the 6 Nations. Tri-Nations, Super 14, Guiness Premiership and the European Trophy, as well as the World League, where the player takes complete control of a team in the 3rd division, and builds his way up to the top division, while earning enough transfer points on the field to keep wages in check and get new signings. A new game mode is also featured, where the player has to re-write history from previous world cups in order to unlock highlight videos from each World Cup and other goodies.

Other features include more flexible camera control, allowing the player to kick the ball more accurately and react quickly after a scrum or lineout, new set pieces and faster defending formations and improved AI. The Impact Players also make a return, and you can expect Dan Carter to pin-point a punt almost from end to end or Bryan Habana to wreck defenses apart with his speed.

The soundtrack is provided by bands such as Malajube, Howling Bells or Tokyo Police Club. …

Richard Burns Rally

Description

Licensed by the late 2001 World Rally Champion, Richard Burns, this rally game tries to find a niche by adding more depth and realism to the racing experience. This is reflected in the car handling, the influence of the weather and the endless tweaking of the car set-up. There are eight officially licensed cars to choose from, with familiar names such as the Subaru Impreza, Citroen Xsara, Peugeot 206, Mitsubishi Lancer Evo and Toyota Corolla, but you need to unlock them by finishing school lessons, winning a rally or making it to the end of a season.

Next to the usual training, quick races, rally seasons and multiplayer mode (only 4-player ‘hot-seat’), you can test your skills in the Richard Burns Challenge, a time trial mode in which get the chance to go head to head with Burns himself. There are 36 stages in total, divided over six countries. The in-game music has been produced by Paul Oakenfold, Andy Hunter, Pepe Deluxe and the Plump DJs. …
