Daytona USA

Description

A port of the most successful arcade racer ever, the home versions of Daytona USA include the same elements that made the original version successful: three highly detailed tracks, arcade driving physics that challenge the player to find the best trajectory to make a flying lap without kissing the rails and beating the checkpoint timer. The 40 cars of the Easy race (later named 3-7 Speedway), one of the stalwarts of the original version, are also present in this version.

These home versions include a new mode (Saturn or PC Mode, depending on the platform) where the three tracks are played without the timer, and optionally in mirror mode, using one of the bonus cars (with additional abilities such as driving on grass or hitting the rails without losing speed) and in one of three lengths: Normal (identical to the arcade original), Grand Prix (2.5 times longer) and Endurance (10 times longer).

On the downside, detail and frame rate suffered a drop to fit the game into the limited hardware of the Saturn and Personal Computers, and lacking any kind of multiplayer, comparing to the two to eight player rumbles of the arcade version. …

Daytona USA Deluxe

Description

Deluxe borrows most of its features from the US/PAL Championship Circuit Edition and the Japanese Circuit Edition, both Sega Saturn exclusives. However, it also adds eight-player network support and a brand new exclusive track; Silver Ocean Causeway. The original hornet from the arcade Daytona USA is also unlockable.

From a technical standpoint, Deluxe offers higher resolution gameplay (leading to higher resolution 2D assets such as the HUD) and greater draw distances over its Saturn counterparts. It has since received a Direct3D patch which adds texture filtering and a semi-functional fogging effect which attempts to hide geometry pop-in. The results of this feature are mixed, however, as no races take place in foggy conditions, meaning pop-in is still noticeable (scenery just appears as a light blue). Furthermore, draw distance is not significantly improved with the patch installed. …

Demolition Racer

Description

Demolition Racer is a racing game with a twist. Rather than a game that just requires you to try and win the race, this game gives you points to destroy the other racers’ cars. The game has many styles of game play so you don’t have to play the same style each game.

There are 5 game styles in the Single Race section of the game. This section does not count towards unlocking cars or tracks. It is for practice and just plain fun. The main style is Demolition.

In Demolition, you race against other cars around the track and get points for hitting them, spinning them in circles and knocking them into the wall. You also get a big bonus for landing on top of a car which will immediately destroy the car. When you finish the race, your final position is found by multiplying the points you got from hitting the other cars with the points that you got for the position you finished in. So if you finish first, but never hit anyone, you won’t win the race. …

Carmageddon 2 – Carpocalypse Now

Description

Carmageddon II is essentially more of the same. Whether this is a good or bad thing pretty much depends on how you liked the first.

In case you need to be told, this game sends the politically-correct-o-meter flying towards absolute zero, perhaps only beaten by Duke Nukem 3D. The framework is a futuristic race inspired by Deathrace 2000 and The Cars That Ate Paris: The contestants, in sport cars, monster trucks, and other motorized abominations, are placed on a track, a real populated area. Getting to the finish line first is secondary, and in fact seldom happens; the real winner is the one to trash everyone else, running over pedestrians on the way for extra profit. …

Carmageddon Max Pack

Description

Carmageddon is a violent car racing game where the racing element can be equally important as wrecking opponents’ cars or gathering kills by ramming into pedestrians. At the beginning the player has only one car and is ranked at #99. The overall objective is to race all the way to the top, collecting the opponents’ cars on the way as trophies (and possibly replacements to one’s vehicle). In the race itself the player tries to damage opponents by driving into them, and can also kill pedestrians.

Damage, kills and spectacular moves earn credits for upgrades and even making repairs to the car at anytime during the race. If a specific opponent’s car is wrecked multiple times in successive races, it is added to the choice of available vehicles. There are many power-ups strewn around the courses that range from useful (more speed, instant brake) to fun and downright absurd. Though the player can win a race by finishing first, wrecking everything in sight is encouraged. The game offers open environments where exploration away from the racing course is encouraged

Carmageddon Max Pack includes the base game along with the Splat Pack expansion. …

OutRun 2006 – Coast 2 Coast

Description

Like its predecessors, OutRun 2006 is an old-school arcade racer, which means that your cars don’t have realistic physics, don’t get damaged and have insanely fast speed.

Since this title is officially licensed by Ferrari, you drive with 15 original models from the DINO 246 GTS over the F430 to the all-new Enzo Ferrari. The heart of the game is the Coast 2 Coast mode in which you race against up to 5 AI players on 15 US themed tracks. In addition you have to impress different girlfriends. She tells you what she wants to see (a hard slide around a curve or a close take-over for example) and you have to perform it to win her heart.

There are 3 other game modes available in singleplayer: OutRun, Time Attack and OutRun2SP. In OutRun2SP you get access to 15 arcade tracks from the original OutRun 2. In OutRun however you need to drive your girlfriend through various checkpoints to the goal before the timer hits zero. In Time Attack you just have to beat the highscore of the current track. You can either race against the clock or against ghost cars. …

Street Racing Syndicate

Description

SRS: Street Racing Syndicate is an arcade racing game, offering more than 50 licensed cars, which are tunable with licensed tuning parts. The player races on tracks situated in Los Angeles, Miami and Philadelphia, both during daylight and at night. It’s also possible to date 18 cute models, each with their own video clips.

The game features two modes:
In Street Mode, there are tree types of awards: money, respect and girls. Money is necessary to buy cars, tuning parts and place bets, and can be earned by winning races and collecting prizes and bets. The player receives respect points for doing tricks such as two-wheel driving or drifting. These points allow them to progress in the game (i.e. unlock races). The last type of award, girls, will date the player if they win a respect challenge. This can be a car chasing, a checkpoint run or a respect points race. There are 8 races with various crews and difficulty, each consisting of three tracks where the player will race against one or three opponents. It’s also possible to drive Street Challenges (point-to-point races) against another car, where the winner takes the bet. Or the player can just cruise around the town in Cruise Zone. …
