Hooligans – Storm Over Europe

Description

Hooligans: Storm Over Europe is a video game recreating the hooliganism which often accompanies international football matches throughout much of Europe.

The game was released in 2002 on the PC platform to immediate controversy due to its violent content and the perceived promotion of criminal behaviour in football, with some politicians calling for it to be banned. A similar media and political reaction had occurred on release of other controversial video games at the time such as Grand Theft Auto, Postal and Carmageddon, all of which featured or encouraged behaviour which would be illegal in real life; for instance, the Grand Theft Auto series features carjacking, excessive speeding and running over pedestrians. The Dutch producers of the game, Darxabre, defended the title stating that it rewarded strategic thinking rather than violence.

The game is played out over a football season and the object of the game is to become the most notorious group of hooligans in Europe in a documentary where one of the reporters who is a former hooligan himself joins the local firm in the Netherlands for a tour around Europe during a continental championship and their attempt to see that the Dutch gets the cup; through any means necessary. In order to achieve this the player proceeds through a variety of levels set in different locations and must injure or kill every opposing hooligan gang. …

Black & White

Description

Spiritual descendant of the Populous games, Black & White is a ‘god’ game in which players take the role of a fledgling deity, called upon by people in need.

Entering the 3D world, players can manipulate objects, move people, and cast miracles. To assist the player, there also exists a creature with its own intelligence and personality. Both the players and their associated creature will evolve during the course of the game, becoming benevolent beings, cruel tyrants, or somewhere in between. As the player’s characters develop, both their creature and the land itself will change, depending on their alignment.

Although the main purpose of the game is to work through the five lands of Eden and win the faith of as many of the tribes as possible, the game is somewhat open ended in its aspects of wandering, exploring, and developing the sidekick creature.

The creatures in the game feature their own artificial intelligence and will grow like a child, both physically and emotionally. They’ll learn by example and put together their own moral codes based on what they witness and learn. Players can pet or scold their creature, nurture it, spoil it, or abuse it. In the end, Black & White is part strategy game, part role-playing game, part child rearing simulator, and part self-examination of the player’s personality. …

Black & White 2

Description

The sequel to Lionhead’s open-ended god game, Black & White, attempts to offer more focused gameplay and larger scale. The player assumes yet again the role of a God and chooses if he will be Good, Evil or something in between.

As a deity that interferes directly with mortal affairs, the player will help his followers, the Greeks, survive and prosper in a mythical land. A good god will improve the city of his followers and eventually attract the inhabitants of neighbouring hamlets, be they neutral or even hostile. An evil god will recruit armies and conquer them.

The player once again has an animal avatar of his choice (between Lion, Ape, Wolf and Cow) which can be trained or left to its own devices. Its A.I. is much more advanced now and revolves around “lessons” learned. Each action it considers to do can be encouraged or discouraged by the player (by slapping or petting) so that a creature does something always/frequently, occasionally, rarely or never. The Creature can harvest, build, entertain, fight, specialize in one of these fields or just wander aimlessly, eat rocks and trees, gag and poop randomly. Depending on its alignment it will also eat or help villagers accordingly. …

Risk II

Description

Risk II is a video game version of the board game Risk, developed by Deep Red Games and published by Hasbro Interactive under the MicroProse label. It’s a sequel to the 1996 version of Risk.

In addition to the classic board game style of play, Risk II introduced new modes including a single-player tournament and a brand new concept called SameTime, in which turns are taken simultaneously by all players. Up to eight players can play, in any combination of human and computer opponents (as long as at least one player is human). Available computer opponents are an assortment of mostly 18th and 19th century generals: Campbell, Mackenzie, Marmont, Barbacena, D’Erlon, Maransin, Solignac, Sherbrooke, Aubert, Spencer, Taupin, Freire, Vauban, Baird, Napoleon and Wellington. Each computer opponent has a different style of attack and a different reliability in honoring alliances.

– Classic Risk
Classic style employs the standard rules of Risk (depending on version, see below), which is one attack move at a time from one location. In this game type, you can attack as many times as you like, and may move through multiple territories with one army, although at least one unit has to be left in any territory you capture. You may also retreat from an attack and move units from one territory to a bordering territory at the end of your attack turn. …
